It goes without saying that some of the most spectacular scenery in America is found in Colorado. My favorite places are in the Southern part of the state which tends to have a little less tourist pressure that farther North.
Durango is a wonderful spot to visit summer and winter. It is loaded with restored nineteenth century buildings, great hotels and excellent food. Plus, there is the steam train that runs between Durango and Silverton. The train is special because it has to climb nearly three thousand feet in less than fifty miles to reach Silverton. That is a serious task for a steam locomotive.
The starting point for the train journey in Durango is in the middle of town. In fact if you choose the right hotel you can just about walk out of the lobby and right on to the train. Now that is convenience.
